Mljet
Mljet is a small island in south Adriatic near Dubrovnik. The island has been inhabited since pre Illyrian times. There are traces of Illyrian buried grounds near Babine Kuće and fortifications on the hill near Mali Gradac. After a long period of harassing Roman ships Augustus managed to subdue them joining the island to the Roman Empire, which was used as a place for exile. Legend has it that Odysseus was attracted by the nymph Calypso on Mljet, which would imply that Mljet was called Melita long time ago. In medieval times the island was owned by the Bosnian kings. It was bought by Dubrovnik Republic in 1333. The western part of the island is a taken by the Mljet National Park. There are villages of Polače and Pomena on the park grounds. Polače was given its name because of the large palace which ruins partially date from the 5th century. At the southern end of the Great Lake on St Mary's Island there is a 12th century Benedictine abbey with a Romanesque church. There are very good sea connections to Mljet from Dubrovnik.
